Window Light Photography: The Only Setup You Need to Start

Many beginners think that creating moody, professional portraits requires a studio full of lighting equipment. In reality, some of the most iconic portraits in history were shot using nothing but a single window.

Window light is the ultimate teacher. It allows you to see exactly how light falls across a face and how shadows define shape, without having to fiddle with flash settings.

The 45-Degree Rule

The most flattering light for most faces hits at a 45-degree angle. Have your subject stand parallel to the window, then ask them to turn their nose slightly toward the glass. This creates a beautiful transition from light to shadow across their face, known as "Rembrandt lighting."

The Assignment: Find a large window (preferably north-facing for consistent, indirect light). Have your subject turn slowly from facing the window directly to facing completely away. Watch how the shadows change their facial structure.
