Rule of Thirds is Just the Beginning: 3 Composition Rules to Try Next

The Rule of Thirds is the first composition rule every photographer learns. It's safe, it's effective, and it instantly makes your photos look more balanced. But if you rely on it for every single shot, your portfolio will quickly become predictable.

To truly develop a photographer's eye, you need to expand your visual vocabulary.

Leading Lines and Framing

Leading Lines: Use natural lines in your environment (roads, fences, rivers, architectural lines) to guide the viewer's eye directly to your subject. This creates a sense of depth and journey in the image.

Sub-Framing: Look for elements in the foreground (a doorway, overhanging branches, a window) to frame your subject. This adds layers to your image and draws the viewer deeper into the scene.

The Assignment: Go for a walk and take 10 photos without using the Rule of Thirds. Focus entirely on finding leading lines and natural frames.
