Kit Lens vs. 50mm Prime: What Should Be Your First Upgrade?

Your camera likely came with a "kit lens" (usually an 18-55mm zoom). It's a great tool to learn on, but you will quickly hit its limitations, especially in low light or when trying to get a beautifully blurred background.

When you are ready to upgrade, ignore the expensive zoom lenses. Your first purchase should be a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens (often called the "Nifty Fifty").

Why Prime Lenses Make You Better

A prime lens does not zoom. If you want a closer shot, you have to physically walk closer. This limitation forces you to think about composition and perspective rather than just standing in one place and twisting a zoom ring.

Furthermore, the f/1.8 aperture lets in massive amounts of light (perfect for indoors) and creates stunning background blur that your kit lens simply cannot replicate.

The Assignment: If you have a zoom lens, tape the zoom ring at the 50mm mark for an entire day. Force yourself to "zoom with your feet" and notice how it changes the way you approach a scene.
