How to Find Good Light Indoors Without Buying Flash Gear

Taking photos indoors is one of the most frustrating experiences for a beginner. Our eyes adjust to dim room lighting instantly, but cameras struggle, often resulting in dark, grainy, or blurry images.

Before you rush out to buy expensive flash gear or studio strobes, you need to master the most powerful light source available to you: the window.

    The Magic of Directional Light

Window light is beautiful because it is directional and often diffused. By simply turning off overhead room lights (which cast ugly shadows under the eyes) and placing your subject next to a window, you instantly create a dramatic, professional look.

The Assignment: Place a subject (a person or an object) 3 feet from a window. Turn off all other lights in the room. Take one photo with them facing the window, and one with them standing sideways to the window. Notice how the shadows change the mood.

Mastering light is the secret to professional photography. In my highly-rated online photography course for beginners, Camera Zero to Hero, I teach you how to see and shape light effortlessly. Enroll in my beginner photography class today and take creative control.
